Executive Masterclass - Responsibilities for Leading Quality and Safety

Background Information

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare’s National Standard 1, Governance for Safety and Quality in Health service organisations, seeks evidence that:  ‘the board, chief executive office and /or other higher level of governance within a health service organisation take responsibility for patient safety and quality of care’.  Failure of governance can lead to catastrophic consequences for patients and families, as noted in the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust:  Public Enquiry Chaired by Robert Francis QC (Feb 2013):

‘Building on the report of the first inquiry, the story it tells is first and foremost of appalling suffering of many patients.  This was primarily caused by a serious failure on the part of a provider Trust Board.  It did not listen sufficiently to its patients and staff or ensure the correction of deficiencies (were) brought to the Trust’s attention.  Above all, it failed to tackle an insidious negative culture involving a tolerance of poor standards and a disengagement from managerial and leadership responsibilities.  This failure was in part the consequence of allowing a focus on reaching national access targets, achieving financial balance and seeking foundation trust status, to be at the cost of delivering acceptable standards of care.’

This Masterclass will explore the regulatory and legal frameworks for healthcare boards and executives – in addition it will explore approaches being taken by Boards from some of the top performing international health facilities that actively support and drive continuous improvement in health care to reduce harm, reduce cost and increase patient satisfaction with service delivery.

Masterclass Learning Objectives: 

  • Understand the role of accreditation and the expectations and responsibilities of Boards and Chief Executives with respect to clinical quality and safety

  • Understand the legal and governance responsibilities for clinical quality and safety

  • Understand the new approaches to governance of clinical quality and safety based on international best practice 

Who should attend?

Board chairs, board members, chief executives and members of the executive team of healthcare facilities including hospital, primary and community care organisations, both public and private sectors.

 Prior learning:

Healthcare experience as a clinician, manager or board member

 ACHS Trainers:

The ACHS has the capacity, through its membership and networks, to harness the skills and knowledge of senior managers and clinicians across the health system in all states and territories.  The ACHS has drawn upon its ongoing relationship with these individuals to bring together a faculty with the relevant skills and experience to deliver this training. 

 Assessment:

No formal assessment.  Participants will be asked to complete an evaluation of the workshop – this will be used to improve future workshops.

Participation in this program will qualify participants for continuing professional development hours, as required by their respective National Board.
