The ACHS Medicare Locals Accreditation Program

The Medicare Locals Accreditation (MLA) Standards were commissioned by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) and will be implemented from 1 June 2013 for all Medicare Locals.

ACHS is one of a select few organisations who has interim approval from the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) to provide a comprehensive accreditation review program to address the requirements of the new MLA Standards.

Accreditation of Medicare Locals aims to support the implementation of best-practice organisational management and service delivery processes to assist in the achievement of Medicare Locals' strategic objectives. Medicare Locals accreditation is one aspect of a broader quality framework seeking to promote:

  • transparency
  • information sharing
  • a culture of continuous quality improvement
  • increased accountability
  • improved performance
  • stakeholder and community confidence.

The ACHS Medicare Locals Accreditation Program Cycle

Under the ACHS Medicare Locals Accreditation Program, membership is for a three-year period during which the member works towards achieving and maintaining accreditation.

Through the two scheduled onsite assessments (surveys), members monitor their progress as they develop integrated systems and processes, evaluate their impact and adapt to change.

A dedicated ACHS Customer Services Manager will provide focused guidance and support throughout the various phases of accreditation and in preparation for surveys. ACHS surveyor teams monitor performance and are trained to provide consultation and support to member organisations during the survey process.
