ACHS Improvement Academy

An introduction to the ACHS Improvement Academy

It is with a great deal of pleasure the ACHS Improvement Academy was launched in March 2016, with Ms Bernie Harrison appointed as the inaugural Director.

Director, Improvement Academy

Following a thorough review of existing ACHS educational offerings and with a desire to meet our members’ future learning requirements, our goal was to determine the most appropriate, contemporary educational model for the future.

One of ACHS’s key goals has always been to provide appropriate education that meets the healthcare industry’s needs.  Just as the relevance of quality and safety has grown over the last 15 or so years, so too has the awareness of the need for contemporary education to ensure that your workforce is equipped to meet the needs of patients/clients and families.

The purpose of creating the Academy is to bring a more structured approach to allow for the educational content to be formally recognised through a CPD program.  Courses will also be modular - allowing participants to create courses to best meet their role and function within organisations e.g. patient safety officers and quality improvement officers.

The Academy offers practical training opportunities that will align with the strategy and mission of organisations whilst maximising the capability of staff.  Programs will be tailored to the role and needs of different staffing levels and will include mixed modes of learning, including opportunities to participate in large scale collaborative improvement projects.

Bernie Harrison is one of the most pre-eminent people in this field in Australia. She has a long association in healthcare and in particular, has spent 15 of those years in the areas of safety measurement and the improvement of health care processes.  She will provide a strong influence in developing a highly-targeted program for the Academy.

In her role as Director, Bernie brings contemporary content and training approaches to the areas of safety and quality. Her particular focus on building capability across the system in all facets of quality and safety, from Boards and Executives to frontline clinicians. As Bernie herself has noted “Patient safety is increasingly moving to the prospective design and redesign of health care processes to prevent harm using: reliable systems thinking; human factors engineering; patient empowerment, lean production and improvement science.”  There will of course continue to be a focus on supporting member’s preparation for surveys and the Australian National Standards.

We look forward to offering you the highest level of quality education in this area in Australia and working with you to determine how we can best serve the needs of your organisation.

I have been involved with Accreditation and the ACHS for 19 years and have found them to be a leading accrediting agency, if not the best for health care organisations.
