A/Professor Phelps has practiced for over 20 years as a Gastroenterologist and Acute Physician in public and private practice in regional Victoria. He trained in safety and quality at Dr Brent James’ Institute at Intermountain Healthcare in the US and has held major management and leadership roles at organisational and at jurisdictional level for Victoria and Tasmania for over 10yrs. More recently he has completed a two-year project as Director of Clinical Governance for Central Adelaide Local Health Network.

Grant has had national policy roles in safety and quality, including membership of key interjurisdictional committees within the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare. He has also been a board member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and from 2016-2018 was President of the Adult Division of the College. He is an Associate Professor of Clinical Leadership with Deakin’s Medical School where he auspiced a Master of Clinical Leadership program.

Grant currently works as an independent consultant providing advice to hospitals and organisations on clinical leadership and safety and quality.
