ACHS will be offering accreditation services to general practices through its new program AAGP (ACHS Accreditation for General Practices).

The new Program will commence in October 2017 and will meet the RACGP Standards for General Practice 5th edition.

As Australia’s longest-running healthcare accreditation organisation, ACHS has a strong reputation of trust and reliability in the field.

ACHS will launch the new program at the Royal Australian College of General Practitioner’s annual conference to be held in Sydney on October 27, at the new Sydney Convention Centre.

In the lead-up to the launch of the program, ACHS has opened an Expressions of Interest register to determine the interest from general practices that may wish to change their existing accreditation provider, as well as those considering undertaking accreditation for the first time.

If you wish to express your interest to change to ACHS, contact ACHS on (02) 9281 9955.

All General Practices are welcome to contact us directly, or if attending the annual conference, to come to our stand and have a chat with us.

More details on the new Program will be published on the website following the launch of the RACGP 5th edition Standards, and the ACHS Program on Thursday 26 October.

About the Program

The 5th edition RACGP Standards were developed to protect patients from harm and to improve the quality and safety of health services in Australia.

The ACHS Accreditation for General Practices program is a three year accreditation program to the applicable RACGP Standards.  Accreditation is awarded following all flagged indicators being rated as ‘met’ at the completion of an onsite survey.

For a general practice or health service to be accredited against the RACGP standards, three core criteria which MUST be met :

  • The practice or health services operate within the model of general practice is described in the RACGP definition of general practice.
  • General practitioner services are predominantly of a general practice nature.
  • The practice or health service can meet all mandatory indicators in the Standards.

ACHS Expertise

The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving the quality of health care in Australia through the continual review of performance, assessment, and accreditation.

ACHS was established in 1974, and continues to be the leading independent authority on the measurement and implementation of quality improvement systems for Australian healthcare organisations.

THE ACHS Vision is to inspire excellence in healthcare.  Its mission is to strengthen safe, quality healthcare by continuously advancing standards and education nationally and internationally. ACHS accreditation programs are based on partnerships and consultation with key stakeholders and participants in the healthcare industry, so that accreditation services reflect their needs and encourage ownership of our programs. The ACHS Accreditation for General Practices program was developed in consultation with a number of Australian general practices, their clinical and administration staff, and experienced general practice surveyors.

ACHS Accreditation for General Practices

Accreditation is public recognition by a health care accreditation body of the achievement of accreditation standards by a health care organisation, demonstrated through an independent external peer assessment of that organisation's level of performance in relation to the standards. The accreditation of general practices provides general practitioners, their staff, and the community with a mechanism for acknowledging the quality of the services offered in a practice.

The aim of accreditation is to encourage continuous improvement and promote best practice principles with associated impact on the standard of care provision and operational management.

ACHS looks forward to extending its years of experience in healthcare accreditation to the general practice sector. To register your interest:
