EQuIP5 Overview

EQuIP5 (5th edition of the ACHS Evaluation and Quality Improvement Program), is a four-year continuous quality assessment and improvement accreditation program for health care organisations that supports excellence in consumer / patient care and services.  The arrangement of elements under graded ratings that reflect increasing maturity of quality improvement activity has been designed to assist and support health care organisations and health services in their quality improvement efforts.

EQuIP was developed by the ACHS to help health care organisations strive for excellence and was designed to be used by all types of organisations which provide health care. Effective use of EQuIP requires an integrated organisational approach to quality improvement.

The starting point for EQuIP5 is the standards grouped into the standards, criteria and elements with a five-level rating achievement under three function areas:

Clinical Function: The Clinical function sets out the standards that are mostly associated with clinical care. Achievement of these standards is generally the responsibility of clinicians.

Support Function: The Support function contains those standards which all organisational sectors are required to work together to achieve.

Corporate Function: The Corporate function identifies those standards for which the governing body and senior executives of the organisation are mostly responsible.

The EQuIP5 program contains 15 mandatory criteria to ensure the quality of care and safety for consumers/patients and those within the organisation.

Self-assessment is an important component of the EQuIP5 four-year membership cycle, which includes two onsite surveys supported by a self-assessment system that assists organisations to monitor their progress in partnership with the ACHS. EQuIP5 onsite surveys are carried out by experienced, external survey teams.
