Meet Simon Cooper – Manager, Performance and Outcomes Service

In this edition, we learn more about Simon Cooper, Manager, Performance and Outcomes Service.
Tell us about your journey with ACHS, how long have you been working here?
I have been working with ACHS for four and half years now. It has been an exciting and challenging journey. Lots of challenges from delivering services through COVID to the release of our new Metrik system.
How does your role support ACHS Members?
My role as Manager of the Performance and Outcomes Service Team supports ACHS members through the delivery of the performance data program. Delivering training on clinical indicators, supporting member queries, and working with our clinical partners developing indicators.
What do you find most rewarding about working in the healthcare sector?
I love the philosophy of improving patient care and I am passionate about advocating for the improvement of the quality of care. I find that seeing the hard data on improving care and the technological changes the most rewarding.
Describe an interesting project that you have worked on.
Most recently I worked on the Metrik project, to deliver new software for the submission and analytics of indicator data. We had the opportunity to integrate artificial intelligence through natural language processing as well as do more interesting examinations of existing data to find health improvement trends.
What comes to mind when you think of healthcare quality improvement?
I think it is the translation of great ideas from clinicians into clinical practice using data, project management and enthusiasm.
What is a memorable interaction you have had with a Member?
I have had loads of memorable interactions with Members, from clinical queries to assisting them with data management. The most memorable interactions are ones which I get to hear a story of how their improvement has worked in practice, such as a new scoring system for risk of infection disease transmission from Peninsular Health.
Which healthcare figure or organisation most inspires you?
I would have to say Avedis Donabedian whose conceptual model of care is the basis for evaluating the quality of healthcare.
What healthcare topic most interests you?
I am quite interested in the demographics of healthcare and how this will create issues and potentially solve some of the issues of the future. I feel that through demography you get to have a little glimpse into what the future might look like and how healthcare may be transformed.
