Healthcare Leaders Driving Change: QIL Projects Summaries 2024

The Quality Improvement Lead (QIL) Program: Project Summaries 2024 6th Edition is now available for viewing on our website.

We are proud to present the 6th Edition of the ACHS Quality Improvement Lead (QIL) Program Project Summaries, showcasing the innovation, leadership and dedication of healthcare professionals across Australia.

Since its inception in 2016, the QIL Program has delivered 18 courses with more than 550 participants representing a diverse range of health sectors. The program, delivered by the ACHS Improvement Academy (IA), is grounded in contemporary improvement science adapted for healthcare systems and inspired by the principles of W.E. Deming’s science of process management.

QIL Graduation Ceremony, November 2024

This year’s cohort brought together 49 participants from 24 organisations across all Australian states and territories — spanning rural, remote, and metropolitan settings. Collectively, they completed 42 unique projects, each driving measurable improvement in one or more key outcomes:

  • Reducing waste and achieving cost savings

  • Minimising adverse patient events

  • Enhancing consumer engagement and service outcomes

The projects featured in this publication reflect the dynamic and evolving landscape of Australian healthcare, showcasing how quality improvement principles are being applied to address real challenges and deliver better outcomes for patients and communities. From increasing access to home paediatric services for First Nations communities, to improving diagnostic utility, and partnering with consumers and carers, these initiatives highlight the forward-thinking spirit of this year’s participants.

We extend our sincere thanks to the ACHS Improvement Academy faculty, whose expertise and commitment to improvement science continue to enrich this flagship program. We also congratulate all QIL graduates for their hard work, creativity and commitment to high-quality, safe care.

Graduates of the QIL Program are eligible to use the post-nominal ACHSQIL, recognising their achievement and leadership in quality improvement.

We invite you to explore this year’s Project Summaries Publication and share the learnings with colleagues.
